Lipton Fans Angry After Brand Pretended to Discontinue Peach Iced Tea as a Prank: ‘Don’t Play with My Emotions’

“WHAT WHY????? WHO ASKED FOR THIS????” one comment read

Lipton took fans through a roller coaster of emotions after it pretended to discontinue its peach iced tea.

The emotional ride began on Tuesday, March 18, when the brand declared, next to an Instagram photo of a can of Peach Lipton Ice Tea with angel wings, “REST IN PEACH.”

“You may have heard that our iconic Peach Lipton Ice Tea flavour is getting discontinued. We know – it hurts (sorry if we’ve ruined your go-to afternoon chill bev). But don’t worry, the rest of your faves are still here to keep you refreshed,” the message read.

“And who knows? Maybe one day, Peach will make a legendary comeback. We appreciate your understanding during this period of adjustment and apologize for any inconvenience caused. #RIPeach,” the message continued.

In the caption, the brand joked it would be making a “support group” for the loss.

“Who’s joining my peach support group? #RIPeach #liptonicetea,” the caption said.

Fans, however, didn’t take the news lightly. They immediately posted in the comments to express their dismay at the idea of the flavor being discontinued.

“Stop acting MAD,” one fan wrote while another commented, “Why on earth.”

“PLEASE tell me this is a joke don’t play with my emotions like this xxx,” a third comment read. “WHAT WHY????? WHO ASKED FOR THIS????” many others asked. Even a comment claiming to be the “dislike button” got over 14,000 likes.

Just hours later however, Lipton shared on social media that “peach is here to stay,” — making fans just as emotional as they felt following the brand’s initial announcement.

I’d never take away your favourite flavour, pookies,” the message read. “Your love for Peach has not gone unnoticed. But I’ve got your back, I will be sending a surprise to the biggest fans with the best reactions ;).”

In the caption, Lipton reiterated that the flavor was not discontinued, asking, “Did you really think she was going anywhere???#liptonicetea #AprilFools

The post got just as much of a reaction as the prank, with AriZona Iced Tea commenting, “This is why people have trust issues.”

“I WAS SPREADING THE SAD NEWS LIKE A WILD FIRE,” another comment read. One fan asked, “Is this what a toxic relationship is?” PEOPLE reached out to Lipton for comment but did not immediately hear back.
