Billie Eilish on the 1 Hair Color That Was Her Favorite: ‘I Felt Like I Was Becoming Who I Am’

The “What Was I Made For?” singer said that her green and black hairstyle felt like her ‘career-defining look’

Billie Eilish has rocked more than half a dozen hairstyles and colors during her career so far — but only one look helped her to grow into herself.

The “What Was I Made For?” singer, 23, spoke with a variety of celebrities for British Vogue on Monday, April 14, about her career, music and style. One question she fielded from Colman Domingo asked her to share her favorite hair colors over the years.

“Well, I really like to romanticize two specific periods in my life: the green roots and the red roots,” Eilish said. “Green and black especially felt like such a personal and career-defining look for me. I felt so exactly who I was at that time.”

“I’d never really seen anything like that before and it felt really nice to have something that felt like mine,” she continued. “That shade of green was like my color for so long. I loved it so much. Hair, nails, clothes. It was such a magical period for me, and it was so intense. I felt like I was becoming who I am.”

In response to a follow-up from Nicki Minaj, Eilish joked that she’d call her iconic green and black look “The Billie.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the Oscar-winner opened up after Chioma NnadiBritish Vogue‘s head of editorial content, asked about some fashion moments from when she was younger that made her cringe.

“I do have to give myself credit for always going so hard,” the artist joked. “I wore like actual bouncy balls with straps on the bottom of my shoes once… But again: I committed to the bit and I regret nothing.”

Eilish has been candid in the past about the insecurities she’s faced over her looks — and her hair is no exception.

Although the “Happier Than Ever” singer sparked new hair inspiration back in March 2021 when she first debuted her platinum locks, she revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone last year her dramatic blonde hair transformation — which she showed off at the Met Gala in 2021 — led to a sort of identity crisis.

“And then I dyed my hair blonde and I immediately was like, ‘Oh, I have no idea who I am,’ ” she told the outlet.

The glamorous look conveyed the softer, jazzier feel of her sophomore album Happier Than Ever, but ultimately, felt too much of a departure from Eilish’s true self.

“In a weird way, that was a little like being in a tornado cellar, reading a cute little story,” Eilish’s brother and collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, said in the profile. “It was a coping mechanism of an album.”

And even when she ditched her lighter hair color in exchange for a dark chocolatey shade closer to her signature black, she still didn’t feel completely herself.

“I look back at that and I’m like, ‘Who is this brunette?’ ” she said. “A brunette! That wasn’t me.”
