“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” the comedian accused host Conan O’Brien
Adam Sandler is crashing the biggest party in Hollywood!
The actor, 58, made a surprise appearance at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., where he appeared in his signature style: a hoodie and basketball shorts!
During host Conan O’Brien’s opening speech, following the show-stopping musical performance by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, he gave the comedy actor a shout-out and the camera panned to him in the audience.
“You’re dressed well, Adam,” O’Brien said. With all eyes on him, Sandler responded, “Conan, what’s up? My brother, what’s going on, man?”
“Adam, what are you wearing?” Conan asked the comedian, who was wearing a bright blue oversized Aviator Nation hoodie and dark blue Adidas basketball shorts with black detailing.

“What are you doing right now?” Sandler asked, to which O’Brien simply explained, “I’m asking you what you’re wearing.”
Sandler reacted dramatically, saying, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up.” O’Brien, in response, noted that he’s “dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.”
The Uncut Gems star was unmoved, insisting, “I like the way I look because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear or what I don’t wear. Did my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers?”
O’Brien, who had been holding in his laughter, earnestly apologized to Sandler. “Hey, I’m sorry,” he said. “Adam, I apologize.”
Sandler said he was going to leave. “It’s not you, no, it’s not you,” he assured members of the audience. “It’s him,” he continued of O’Brien. “He’s the one who caused this.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” the host said.

Addressing the audience, Sandler said, “You are all welcome to join me for a game of five-on-five basketball at Veteran Park tonight, midnight.” But before making his grand exit, he walked up to Timothée Chalamet, nominated for Best Actor for his role in A Complete Unknown, and continued his running joke of saying his last name in an exaggerated fashion. He then kissed the actor on the head.
Sandler first made the “Chalamet” joke at January’s 2025 Golden Globe Awards after host Nikki Glaser teased the Call Me By Your Name alum during the opening monologue by telling him, “Your name sounds like something Adam Sandler would say.”
The Happy Gilmore star replied from the audience with his own spin on the pronunciation.
Sandler pronounced his name in the same Sandler-ified manner at his latest SNL appearance where he appeared to introduce Chalamet as a musical guest as he was doing double-duty as host.
