FDA Issues Recall for Coffee Grounds in 15 States

Nearly 700 cases of the product were incorrectly labeled as decaffeinated

Coffee lovers will need to double-check the label of their favorite morning pick-me-up beverage.

On Tuesday, March 25, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class II recall on Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA. The parent company provides coffee products to retailers, one of which is Our Family. The recall, voluntarily initiated by Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA, was initiated on Thursday, March 13. As of writing, the recall has yet to be terminated.

According to the report, the recall was because of a mislabeling issue. “A portion of the production of Our Family Traverse City Ground Coffee was mislabeled as decaffeinate,” reads the report.

As a Class II risk, coming into contact with or being exposed to the contaminated product may “cause temporary or medically reversible” health consequences, though the chances of a person becoming seriously harmed are minimal.

The product that has been recalled is Our Family’s Traverse City Cherry-Flavored Decaf Light Roast Ground Coffee, which comes in 12-ounce bags, and has a best-buy date of Aug. 8, 2025. The recall included 692 cases of the contaminated product, which were shipped to 15 states. These include Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

This recall is just one of the many that have already happened this year, with one even being coffee-related in nature. Earlier this month, the FDA issued a recall on over 75,000 bottles of two International Delight Coffee Creamers. Danone, LLC, the parent company of the brand, reported receiving complaints of “spoilage and illness,” which also constituted a Class II risk classification.

A representative from Danone North America, in a statement obtained by PEOPLE at the time, confirmed the “texture issue.”

“A limited number of these products did not meet our quality standards, due to premature spoilage manifesting as a texture issue,” read the statement. “While we know this is disappointing for our creamer fans, testing data has confirmed that this is not a food safety issue. We chose to voluntarily recall these isolated products out of an abundance of caution while we address the quality issue.”

The representative also maintained the company was addressing and taking the matter seriously as “this is not the quality we strive for.”

Other recalls this year have included dark chocolate products from Cal Yee Farms, baked goods from one of Dunkin’s vendors, a cheese from Aldi and Coca-Cola soda packs.
