Freakier Friday: All About the Freaky Friday Sequel Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan

From the cast to the release date, here’s everything to know about the anticipated sequel

Get ready for another Freaky Friday! 

In June 2024, Disney confirmed that a sequel to the hit 2003 film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan is in production, and now, the release of the movie is almost here.

Not only have Curtis and Lohan reprised their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, but a handful of other original stars are also expected to return.

Plans for a sequel were first reported in 2022 when Curtis confirmed to PEOPLE that there was “lots of good talk going on” about a potential sequel. When the film celebrated its 20-year anniversary in May 2023, Curtis and Lohan reunited for an interview with The New York Times, where the latter said she would also be open to a sequel. 

Since then, fans have gotten a handful of new details, including the director and reported storyline. 

From the cast to the release date, here’s everything to know about the upcoming sequel.

Which cast members are returning for Freakier Friday?

Curtis and Lohan will reprise their roles as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna, respectively. Additionally, original cast members Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao will be back in the sequel. 

Who is joining the cast of Freakier Friday?

While there are plenty of familiar faces in the cast, the upcoming movie will introduce a slew of new characters played by Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Sophia Hammons, per Variety.

Though not many details on their characters have been formally announced, Lohan confirmed at D23 that Jacinto will be playing her character’s husband. “Manny is lovely, so funny,” told Entertainment Weekly of The Good Place alum.

Who is directing Freakier Friday?

Nisha Ganatra is slated to direct the new flick. Ganatra is no stranger to the Disney family having previously helmed episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales. She also directed female-led films such as The High Note starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross as well as Late Night starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.

Is there a trailer for Freakier Friday?

The first trailer for Freakier Friday arrived in March 2025, catching up with Tess and Anna in present day.

The mother and daughter can be seen having their palms read by a fortune teller (played by Vanessa Bayer) who hints that they could switch places again.

Following a restless night’s sleep, Tess and Anna wake up in the wrong bodies again, but this time, Anna has swapped places with her teenage daughter, Harper, while Tess has swapped with Harper’s friend who was sleeping over at the time.

The trailer ends with Chad Michael Murray making his “sexy grand entrance” as he pulls up on his motorcycle, taking his helmet off just like he did in the first movie.

What is Freakier Friday about?

In April 2024, Entertainment Weekly reported that the plot would revolve around Lohan and Curtis’ characters switching bodies with two teenage girls.

With the release of the full trailer for the movie in March 2025 came more information about the plot. “The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” says the movie’s synopsis.

Per a casting call shared on Ganatra’s Instagram Stories while the movie was still in production, the film was also casting Anna’s 14-year-old daughter, Harper, who was described as “a tomboy with a sharp sense of humor” who’s “in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restaurateur Eric Davis.” 

According to the description, Eric also has a 14-year-old daughter, Lily, who does “not see eye to eye” with Harper — even as their families are about to join together via marriage.

When did Freakier Friday start filming?

On June 24, Walt Disney Studios confirmed that filming for the sequel was underway as they shared a photo of Curtis and Lohan on set. The actresses were seen sitting in front of each other’s trailers while holding hands and striking poses reminiscent of their “swapped” roles in the first film: Lohan with a mature smile and Curtis “rocking out.”

Lohan also shared some fun behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot to her Instagram.

Filming on the movie wrapped in August 2024. As she kicked off her last week on set, Lohan shared a post on Instagram looking back on her experience filming, thanking her costar in the process.

“I’m so grateful to have made this film, a story of family, mothers and their children and a film filled with love, laughter and a ton of heart!” she wrote. “It has been a pleasure to work with my dear friend @jamieleecurtis who brings so much joy to our set everyday and she has made this all the more special!.”

When will Freakier Friday be released?

As Walt Disney Studios announced filming for the sequel, they also confirmed that the film will be released in 2025. In October 2024, the studio revealed the exact release date for the movie in a post on Instagram: Aug. 8, 2025.

Variety reports that the film will exclusively debut in theaters, despite previous reports that it would be a Disney+ original.
