Megan Moroney Says She’s Single and Hasn’t Been in a Relationship for Almost a Year: ‘I’ve Always Had Bad Taste in Men’

The country star told Rolling Stone her last relationship was with a “regular finance dude”

Megan Moroney is known for her breakup anthems — and she doesn’t have to look too far for inspiration.

The country star, 27, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone’s Future of Music series, and said she’s been single since early last year, when she broke up with “a regular finance dude.”

Moroney then showed off some self-deprecation, admitting that she hasn’t always picked the best boyfriends.

“I feel like I’ve always had bad taste in men,” she said. “I had a really sweet boyfriend in fifth grade, and I broke up with him because I wanted to date the eighth-grade bad boy who had failed a bunch of times… I don’t know if this song will make my next aman onlbum, but an opening line is ‘I know how to pick them. Copy, paste.’”

While the “Tennessee Orange” singer certainly wants her happy ever after, she explained that being single amid her ascent to country superstardom has actually been for the best.

“I could not imagine going through the past year if I was upset and crying over a dude,” she told RS.

Moroney, who released her second album Am I Okay? in July, kept her relationship with her ex out of the spotlight, but did hint at their breakup in May while promoting her song “Man on the Moon.”

In a video shared to TikTok, she asked her fans why they’d want to send a man to the moon and answered her own question, writing, “I’ll go first. Once upon a time I dated a guy that said he didn’t need to know my songs [because] I didn’t know that much about his finance job.”

The star was recently linked to country singer Riley Green, but shut down any romance talk to Rolling Stone, saying they both happened to be vacationing in St. Barts separately at the same time.

“It’s one of those things where if you know someone on a small island, you’re like, ‘Oh, s—, you’re here too.’ So it was fun.” Are you dating?” she said. “Just because we’re hanging out doesn’t mean we’re romantically dating. You know what I mean?”

She was also previously linked to Morgan Wallen, who was rumored to be the muse behind her breakthrough hit “Tennessee Orange.” Moroney later confirmed that she was wearing his shirt in the song’s promotional art, and said on Call Her Daddy in July that they did spend time together romantically after meeting in 2020, but were “never exclusively” dating.

“We were friends for a long time. We were not just friends. And now we’re friends,” she explained.

Moroney told PEOPLE that same month that dating had taken a bit of a backseat on her list of priorities as of late, and that she has never “been more single.”

“I really don’t have time for it right now,” she said. “I tried dating for a second and then I quickly realized that now is not the time. I think in the album you get that vibe. The love songs were very short-lived!”

She continued, “Unfortunately a lot of my personal life revolves around my work life, so that’s why dating right now is just not something that’s in the front of my mind. I don’t really worry about it too much.”

Moroney is set to kick off a headlining tour in March that will keep her on the road through October. The star is set to receive the Rulebreaker Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards later this month, and also recently performed on NPR Music’s beloved Tiny Desk Concert series.
