Rachel Zegler Celebrates Snow White Being the ‘#1 Movie in the World’

Disney’s new live-action remake has totaled $87.3 million, making it the weekend’s top box office earner

Rachel Zegler is on top of the world.

The star of Snow White, Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic, took to Instagram on Monday, March 24 to celebrate the new movie’s success.

“#1 MOVIE IN THE WORLD!” wrote Zegler, 23, captioning a photo of her smiling in costume as the titular princess, waving from her trailer on the movie’s set. In keeping with Snow White’s most recognizable imagery, she added two emojis: a red apple and a snowflake.

The new Snow White, costarring Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, made $43 million domestically in addition to $44.3 million internationally as of Sunday, per Variety. While its box office performance proved more bashful than happy given its budget of over $240 million, the Marc Webb-directed fairy tale indeed emerged as the weekend’s top earner over runner-ups Black Bag, Captain America: Brave New World and Mickey 17.

Also debuting this weekend on the big screen were the Robert De Niro-starring Alto Knights, earning a disappointing $3.2 million domestically and $1.8 million abroad, and the Jonathan Majors-led Magazine Dreams, which totaled only $700,000.

Zegler has offered behind-the-scenes glimpses and glowing accounts of filming the new Snow White on her social media. “This movie was a life-changing experience that has held about four years of my career,” the Golden Globe winner wrote in a March 20 Instagram upload. She added that “the growing up you do from the age of twenty (when i was cast) to twenty-three (the age i am now) cannot be accurately described, yet they exist here on film forever.”

Snow White’s release has not been without controversy. Zegler (who is of Colombian and Polish descent) faced racist backlash from social media users over a person of Latinx background being cast as the Disney princess; she also made headlines by calling 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs “dated.”

Adapted by Erin Cressida Wilson, the new movie features original songs by composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It costars Andrew Burnap as Snow White’s love interest, a new character named Jonathan, as well as the voices and motion-capture performances of Jeremy Swift as Doc, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, George Salazar as Happy, Andy Grotelueschen as Sleepy, Tituss Burgess as Bashful, Jason Kravits as Sneezy and Andrew Barth Feldman as Dopey.

Snow White is in theaters now.
