Seventy years of Magic: Celebrating Disneyland’s enduring legacy

As Disneyland turns 70, the iconic park is pulling out all the stops for its most whimsical celebration yet. From breathtaking parades and projection shows to limited-edition treats and star-studded performances, “Celebrate Happy” promises an unforgettable blend of nostalgia and innovation. PEOPLE got an early look inside the festivities kicking off May 16 — and it’s pure Disney magic.

A celebration seven decades in the making

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is turning 70 — and the party has already begun. While the official anniversary lands on July 17, the beloved park is launching its “Celebrate Happy” festivities early, with celebrations set to continue through summer 2026.

The anniversary honors Walt Disney’s original dream while embracing the joy and imagination that continues to define the park. “We don’t live in the past, but we honor it,” said Scott Damien Arroyo, a director with Disney Live Entertainment. “We’re always looking backward as we move forward.” From revamped parades to nightly spectaculars, this milestone celebration invites guests of all ages to rediscover happiness in every corner of the resort.

A parade of joy: The “Celebrate happy Cavalcade”

One of the first sights greeting guests this season is the vibrant Celebrate Happy Cavalcade. Winding down Main Street, U.S.A., this high-energy mini-parade features Disney icons like Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Daisy, as well as a royal lineup of Disney Princesses, including Pocahontas, Jasmine, and Merida.

The characters arrive in all-new anniversary outfits designed just for the occasion. “Mickey’s jacket even has nods to Sorcerer Mickey and little bursts of pixie dust,” revealed Jennifer Magill of Disney Live Entertainment. “They’re fun, contemporary, and packed with Easter eggs for fans to spot.” The soundtrack? A fresh set of upbeat tunes composed specifically for the 70th — just the kind of party music to get you dancing curbside.

Nighttime magic: Projection shows, parades, and fireworks

As daylight fades, the park transforms into a glowing wonderland of light, color, and emotion. Leading the lineup is Tapestry of Happiness, a heartfelt five-minute projection show displayed on the iconic façade of It’s a Small World.

“I call this a little show with a big heart,” said Susanna Tubert, creative director for Disney Live Entertainment. “It’s a love letter to Disneyland — past, present, and future.” With three showings each night, it’s a must-see moment that wraps guests in feel-good nostalgia. Immediately after, guests can enjoy the return of Paint the Night, a beloved nighttime parade featuring glowing floats and characters from Monsters, Inc., Cars, The Little Mermaid, and beyond.

For the grand finale, the Wondrous Journeys spectacular at Sleeping Beauty Castle fuses video projections with jaw-dropping fireworks in a tribute to Disney storytelling that spans generations.

Across the park: Pixar, muppets, and waterworks

The magic doesn’t end at Disneyland. Over at Disney California Adventure Park, the celebration continues with the new Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! parade. Featuring favorites like Woody, Buzz, Miguel from Coco, and characters from Turning Red, the parade is a daytime joyride through Pixar’s beloved cinematic world.

After dark, head to Paradise Bay for World of Color – Happiness!, a mesmerizing water show featuring music, projections, and characters from Inside Out and Inside Out 2. According to Magill, “We realized you can’t have happiness without all of the emotions.”

In a delightful twist, the show includes a pre-show featuring The Muppets, who also celebrate their 70th birthday this year. “Ms. Piggy had quite a few wardrobe requests,” Magill laughed. “Let’s just say there are some custom looks involved.” Guests are advised to arrive early so they don’t miss the Muppets’ surprise appearance and messages.

Food, fashion, and merch galore

It wouldn’t be a true Disney celebration without themed food and limited-edition merchandise. The park is rolling out new menu items inspired by retro Disneyland snacks, alongside photo-worthy confections like Mickey-shaped pastries and glittering churros.

On the fashion front, expect apparel and accessories emblazoned with the signature “Celebrate Happy” branding — with a vibrant color palette and design motifs inspired by the park’s history. From Minnie ear headbands to collectible pins and home décor, there’s something for every Disney enthusiast. And yes, there’s a soundtrack. The Jonas Brothers’ original song “Celebrate Happy”, created specifically for the anniversary, is now streaming across platforms and playing throughout the parks during the celebration.

A year or two of magic awaits

The “Celebrate Happy” festivities officially launched May 16 and will run until summer 2026, giving guests plenty of time to join the party. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a first-time visitor, Disneyland’s 70th promises magic at every turn — and a joyful invitation to create new memories in the place where happiness lives. As Mickey might say: See ya real soon!
