Vernon spoke about the “powerful” moment on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’
Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon is reflecting on a big moment.
On Wednesday, April 2, Vernon, 43, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and opened up about collaborating with Taylor Swift.
Asked how he felt about Swift, 35, playing their collaborations during her Eras Tour, and the crowd of Swifties singing along, Vernon replied, “Out of body. Out of body.”
“Sadly we didn’t ever get a chance to sing it with her on her tour,” he added. “She got to come sing it with us [in 2022] but I saw those clips and I’m like, ‘Gosh, they sound better than one of me can sound.’ ”
Vernon continued, “I mean pretty powerful to just see that and to hear how that sounded. It was amazing.”
Bon Iver featured on Swift’s 2020 song “exile” from her album folklore, as well as the title track from her 2020 album evermore.

Swift also collaborated with Vernon’s band Big Red Machine on their 2021 album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, which featured two tracks with Swift — “Birch” and “Renegade.”
Last year, Swifties stepped in to sing Vernon’s “exile” verse as well as his back-and-forth parts during Swift’s Eras Tour show in Poland in August.
In a video captured by a fan, the audience could be heard screaming as the pop superstar began singing “exile.” They then started singing Vernon’s first verse.
“I can see you standing, honey / With his arms around your body / Laughin’, but the joke’s not funny at all,” the fans sang with Swift. “And it took you five whole minutes / To pack us up and leave me with it / Holdin’ all this love out here in the hall.”

The crowd then loudly harmonized with Vernon’s back-and-forth parts as Swift sang her parts during the chorus, bridge and outro.
Speaking about how he and Swift didn’t meet until after the release of folklore, Vernon told The New Yorker in October 2024, “I was, like, ‘Wow, you’re somebody that I would have been very close friends with in high school.’ ”
